popsicle, anyone?

IMG_0800

I created this project on a whim one day after my usually uncranky 2 year old kid who was, on this particlar day, very very very cranky and wanted one of Mr. Freeze type Fruit Chillers Tubes popsicles but had gotten even more cranky when he realized that it was too cold for his hands! I grabbed a knitted dishcloth to wrap around it but it would slide around and was hard for him to keep holding. So, voila, this popsicle cozy was created.

I worked this in one piece, and literally took me about 20 minutes with scrap yarn, as you don’t need all that much! There is some detail which actually helps make the cozy scrunch down easier if necessary (totally unintended). This is a great way to stash bust!

I’ve jotted down some notes, however, it’s my first pattern, so be gentle with me! Please comment on any errata. It’s a pretty simple, straight forward pattern, with lots of chances to improvise your own designs.

Mr. Freeze Sleeve

Suggested Yarn: Stash Bust! I suggest any worsted weight in a washable DARK color for those brightly colored food dyes. I used Lion Brand Cotton-Ease in Taupe here, and think that Lily’s Sugar n Cream would work well too.

Needles: I used size 7 (4.5 mm) with a worsted weight yarn; cable needle

Pattern notes: this tube is created in one piece with a closed end on one side, and bound off openwork on the other. All slip stitches are purlwise. Also, when starting new row, make sure yarn is at back of work by bringing yarn underneathand between the needles. On a purl row, which appears stockinette, you will want to flip the yarn to the front to purl, and to the back to slipstich.

Popsicle notes: I found it was easier to cut the bottom edge of the popsicle tube a little shorter, and round the corners a bit to slide into the sleeve. Also, found it easier to scrunch the sleeve, put tube in, and pull up around popsicle (kinda like pantyhose really).

Pattern:

CO 10 or 12 sts (needs to be even number of sts)

Row 1: Knit across

Row 2: K1, sl 1, (K1, sl 1)* rpt to last 2 sts, K1 sl last st

Row 3: bring yarn to back of work (see pattern notes), K1, sl 1, (K1, sl 1)* rpt to last 2 sts, K1 sl last st

Row 4-9: Repeat Row 3

Row 10: P1, sl 1, (P1, sl 1)* rpt to last 2 sts, P1, sl last st

Row 11: Repeat Row 6

Repeat Rows 2-11, 3 more times, or to desired length.

Bind off as follows: K1, *(sl 1 onto cable needle, K1, pass first knitted st over second knitted stitch), repeat from * until 1 knitted stith remains, turn, and bind off from cable needle.

Weave in ends. Slip in Mr. Freeze Popsicle or a Fruit Chillers Tube, cut off top, and enjoy!IMG_0802
